Director Jenny Kokai on Mastodons

This was my first pandemic era live performance and I wanted to do something boldly theatrical ensemble based with a huge challenge– a 9 foot puppet operated by 4 puppeteers. For me, the heart of this play was about a person who has been told she is too big, too impractical, too much and needed to find her place in the world. For many of our students, they felt a similar thing until they found theatre. So this play was really about celebrating getting to be together and make theatre again.

Director (and playwright!) Jenny Kokai shared these thoughts along with some great production shots of Weber University’s “The Impracticality of Modern-Day Mastodons” from 2021. Here’s to bold impracticality!
